Got Keramiekon...

I got some good news the other day that I would like to blab about...my piece, Got Milk Rock Machine got into an international exhibition in Croatia called "Ceramica Multiplex" or "Keramiekon" or...
"THE INTERNATIONAL FESTIVAL OF POSTMODERN CERAMICS 2009 - "The exhibition CERAMICA MULTIPLEX"...with a possible subtitle, "Nature as Adventure"...ok, its something like that...I think I am missing something in translation but anyways there are a bunch of countries participating in this event..."The greatest and most important ceramic manifestation in Croatia will take place from April 18 till May 17 2009 in the City Museum of Varazdin and other places in the town.It will be held under the patronage of the Croatian Ministry of Culture and the Varazdin City Council"...uh huh, uh huh...straight from their website...anyways I am one of 14 Americans involved, maybe only 15 applied to be in, I don't know...Funny thing is that a colleague, the ceramics professor, Kevin Turner, here at IUP also got two of his pieces juried into the show...go figure, 14 people out of this entire country and one works with me.

I am happy this piece is getting some love. I made this piece a year or so back and it did not fit into the body of work I was producing at the time, but I still liked it and felt it had some strange merit to it...it fits into my current obsession of nature/synthetic...of man's manipulation of the landscape and its replacement with objects from our interior life. How realities are formed around kitsch objects as well as an exploration of materials and surfaces.

So here are 2 more shots of Got Milk Rock Machine...this piece is comprised of two parts, both are mid range stoneware...hand built and thrown parts...translucent green glaze, gumball like surface-opaque white, commercial decals and black, rubbery tool dip... about 12"x10"x8".

hey k-fresh!
congrats on the "Ceramica Multiplex" show- i didn't get into that one so i am quite jealous- but i did get into the cup show in missoula and a small scale sculpture show in eastern washington- so two out of three aint too bad. i have not been online much because my wife and i moved off the farm into town- AND... SHE GOT A REAL JOBY JOB. we will make a big move to farmville va in the summer-(she will teach at hampden sydney) right now we are living with a friend (in a really nice neighbor hood where everyone has way fancier dogs and very coordinated running attire- big adjustment) and saving up to buy us a real house. and still working on the bird houses. can't wait to get our collabrative piece in the mail... i will email my new address and ups account. hope all is well!

I too am one of the "14" you spoke of. I'm not sure how many other US artist even knew of the show. I found out about it on a UK website call for entries. Did you ship your work out FEDEX? That was a huge blunder on thier part. Parcel post or priority mail is the way to go on those international shows. UPS and FEDEX are just outrageous....3-4 times the cost of USPS! In the words of Karl Beamer "thats all I have to say about that" (OK so he got that from Forest Gump)
Great work and I look forward to seeing it many other shows!

To recommend FEDEX was not the only blunder from the organization of Ceramica Multiplex. I travelled to the opening and they recommended to book hotel through LilyTour. I never saw either welcome drink or farewell dinner thougt that was said to be included, and room was overpriced compared to ordinary prices.
The workshop was canceled.
Main exhibition was ok but they had spread out artworks in a lot of places, like shop-windows in the city, impossible to find!! I wouldn´t recommend anyone to apply for this show next time.
